The Voice In Cinema – S4S : Week 2
The Nine Muses dir. John Akomfrah 2012
I watched the first 30 mins The Nine Muses by John Akomfrah.
As I didn’t read any context on the film it took a little while to understand the context. I found the use of archival material engaging and will think about this in the context of my audio paper as intend to.
Structural elements of a soundtrack:
- NON SYNC/SYNC SOUNDS
- DIEGETIC/NON DIEGETIC
- DIALOGUE
- ADR
- VOICEOVER
- SYNC
- ATMOSPHERES
- SOUND
- FX
- FOLEY
- MUSIC
- SOUND DESIGN
Schaeffer’s Acousmêtre : a kind of voice-character specific to cinema that derives mysterious powers from being heard and not seen. The disembodied voice seems to come from everywhere and therefore to have no clearly definded limits to its power.
Gaze – Dir. Farnoosh Samadi
My thoughts on Gaze. I enjoyed this short film. It was tense and had a relatable narrative focus. The hum of the bus the drone of everyday normality. The tension from her deciding wether to speak or not. The footsteps walking back that speed up as she hurries. The motorcycle as a reoccurring antagonist/motif.
