Class Critical Reflection
It was helpful to hear everyones thoughts on the work in progress of my audio paper. At this point I was still working on the specific sounds in the soundscape, so hadn’t spent much time mixing it (other than the basic as I went along), however people seemed to think that mix was fine – I suppose this is in support of the aesthetic conventions of collage, whereas I hoped to spend more time working on sculpting the sound objects/samples into a more ambient nature – the samples existing as soundscapes of their own. Because of the general consensus I will keep this bed mostly the same.
I was happy with the comments that people made on the location-soundscapes feeling like a journey or road-trip, as this is what I aimed to achieve (and will likely resist in future work)
The main takeaway from the critical is the need for narration. This is as much to fit it into the academic nature of the audio paper format but also give more context to the audio for those who unaware of certain references – a large part of the sounds used in this paper. I wonder If people might have made the connection to land politics if I had not given them the context previously – or maybe they would only pick it up upon listening more than once.
(in spite of my person criticisms on the focus of audio papers on performance and language, what in belief reduces the entire point of using sound specifically as a medium – unless if the focus is on the preservation of spoken language)
I suppose the narrative of a journey parallels.
I still wish to keep the amount of language to a minimum as a reflection of my thoughts, however will include things that will give more context to the themes.
